Simko Hunts For Good Finish In Kentucky
Sparta, Kentucky - - After finishing a respectable 12th last month at Salem Speedway, ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Michael Simko heads to Kentucky Speedway this weekend looking to improve and record his seventh top-ten finish of his career in Saturday's Harley Davidson Cincinnati 150.
Simko, along with his Auburn Racing team participated in the open test session at Kentucky Speedway last weekend with uncharacteristic results. Piloting the No. 45 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Simko turned a lap of 33.400 seconds equaling a speed of 161.677 MPH good enough for 27th on the overall speed charts.
"We didn't test nearly as well as we had hoped, but we're certain we've made the right changes in the days between the test and race to put us up front with this new 2005 Chevrolet Monte Carlo," explained Simko, the second generation ARCA driver.
Despite the disappointment in testing, Simko is no rookie at mastering the 1.5-mile Superspeedway. In his first ever Superspeedway start back in 2003, Michael wowed the regulars with an impressive eighth place finish. He came back a year later and proved his determination was no fluke posting a very solid 11th place finish. This weekend, Simko would like to score his first top-five finish of the season in what is expected to be one of the best ARCA races from Kentucky Speedway yet.
"We really need a good finish to keep our hopes up in winning this year's Rookie of the Year honors," continued the avid late model competitor. "This year's rookies are all very talented and all are pretty much with a top tier team, and if we want to compete, we'll need every race to be one of our best. Hopefully we can nail down a sponsorship that will provide us the ability to run the remainder of the schedule, but fornow we're just doing what we can do."
Mound Steel Supplies and Diamond Racing will serve as sponsor's on Simko's automobile for the third time this season. "It's great to have Mound Steel & Supplies and Diamond Racing back on board with us. We're looking for more help. It's our intent to hopefully find enough sponsorship so we can run the remainder of the ARCA schedule. Every year we compete our team gets better. We all have full time jobs and spent countless amounts of hours working on the racecars. If we found the perfect advertising partner we could really turn some heads," concluded Michael.
The Harley Davidson Cincinnati 150 is the fourth of 23 events on the 2005 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. Practice begins Friday, May 13th with an extensive afternoon session planned. Qualifying is on tap first thing Saturday morning with the race set to take the green flag later that day just after 3:00pm EST.
