McGilton Hopes To Keep Momentum Wave Going In Lakeland
"Rookie Leader Looks For Second Straight Top-10 Finish"
LAKELAND, Fla (March 20, 2007) - - Following an impressive top-10 performance in his Daytona International Speedway (DIS) debut last month, ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie Phillip McGilton rolls towards Central Florida looking to keep the momentum streak alive with another top-10 in Saturday's Construct Corps-PBG 250.
Rewinding back to Daytona, McGilton, a developmental driver for Brewco Motorsports practiced competitively, qualified a career best 11th, avoided a caution-filled ARCA 200 at Daytona to cross the line ninth, tying a previous best at Kansas Speedway in 2006.
Heading from the high banks and fast speeds of Daytona, McGilton steers towards the inaugural Construct Corps-PBG 250, the second short track of his young career.
"Everyone is really excited about Lakeland," said McGilton. "I'm not really sure what to expect as far as the track because we didn't have the opportunity to test there, but I know we're coming with a great Ford Fusion and we have a shot at our second top-10 finish of the year."
The lack of short track experience doesn't seem to bother McGilton and for good reason. He is surrounded by veterans.
"I don't have a lot of track time on the smaller tracks, but thankfully I have people that want to help me learn and this is what our season is all about, learning. We're going to utilize the three hours of practice we'll have on Friday and Saturday to dial in our No. 47 SIPerformance Ford Fusion. If we can get a good handle on our car, I think we'll be a factor for ARCA pole qualifying and the race."
He continued, "Anything can happen on the short tracks, kinda like Daytona. If you are in the storm, you can be swept up before the blink of an eye. If we qualify up front there's a good chance we'll be out of that mess and that's exactly what we plan to do."
SI Performance return as the primary sponsor of the No. 47 Ford Fusion for the first ARCA RE/MAX event held at USA International Speedway.
Currently McGilton sits ninth in ARCA RE/MAX Series points and leads the Rookie-of-the-Year standings. The team is fully aware another good run on Saturday night will propel the team in the point standings.
"We're in a good position right now," offered McGilton. "The better our finishes, the more points we can gain to be around for the big title at the end of the season. I really would like to be crowed ARCA RE/MAX Rookie-of-the-Year, that's our main goal."
Rolling into Lakeland, McGilton has seven ARCA RE//MAX Series starts to his credit with a career best finish of ninth twice at Kansas Speedway (July 2006) and Daytona International Speedway (February 2007). He has also qualified a career best of 11th at Daytona International Speedway (February 2007).
