Front row for Howard; career best start for 17-year-old wonder.
Lenexa, KS (May 31, 2003) -- Shelby Howard, driver of the #64 Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge, will start from the outside pole for the BPU 200 at Kansas Speedway on Sunday. He turned a quick lap of 33.109 for a speed of 163.098 mph.
Today's qualifying effort is a career-high for the seventeen-year-old Howard. His previous best was 4th on 5 other occasions. He will start alongside pole sitter Frank Kimmel, who captured his 30th career pole.
In 2003, when it comes to qualifying, Howard has been pretty close to the front by the end of the day. In the season opener at Daytona, he blew an engine before he could even take his first lap, forcing him into provisional land (started 35th). Since then, his average starting position is 5th.
While he isn't certain he had a shot at the pole today, he knows he could've been faster if the cloud cover had stayed around.
"The sun came out, so the track heated up a lot before our run," said Howard. "We've got some minor changes to make, but we're very happy to be starting up front. The Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge is running great and we're ready to go racing."
Howard was also 2nd in the first practice session (32.768, 164.795 mph). He was 4th in Happy Hour (33.640, 160.523 mph), but only 19/100ths of a second slower than Kimmel (1st at 33.447, 161.449 mph).
Howard is currently 5th in the ARCA RE/MAX point standings.
The BPU 200 from Kansas Speedway is tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. EDT. The race will be broadcast on the Outdoor Channel next Sunday at 4 p.m.
