NOTES OF INTEREST: Often recognized as the most versatile series in the world, the ARCA RE/MAX Series will live up to its reputation this Labor Day Weekend when the diverse tour heads back to Illinois for a superspeedway/dirt-track extravaganza. After racing on the new 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday Sept 1, the series steers for the DuQuoin dirt-mile less than 2 days later for the Federated Auto Parts Southern Illinois 100 on Monday Sept 3. The entry list for Chicagoland includes an interesting mix of veterans and rookies alike. From the veteran side, local favorite (Mokena IL) Bob Strait (16-time winner) is entered as are former series champions Tim Steele and Frank Kimmel. Kimmel, the current point leader, has posted 7 victories this year and has already led 996 laps in 15 races. Steele hasn't raced since winning the July 28 Pocono Pepsi ARCA 200. Third generation drivers Jason Jarrett and Justin Labonte are also entered. Jarrett, son of 99 Winston Cup champ Dale Jarrett, is currently 2nd in points and leads a tight Rookie of the Year battle over Todd Bowsher and Donny Morelock. Labonte, son of 2-time Cup champ Terry Labonte, will be campaigning a Dodge Intrepid for the Chicagoland event. Rookie sensation Stuart Kirby is also entered. In only 6 starts, Kirby has 4 top-5 finishes including a runner-up finish to Kimmel at Lowe's as well as a new 1-lap track record at Pocono. On Monday, the same ARCA RE/MAX Series teams will race on the 1-mile DuQuoin IL dirt oval. Winston Cup players Ken Schrader, Andy Petree and Tony Stewart have filed entries for the DuQuoin dirt classic.
