Leonard Qualifies 23rd In Stout Salem Field
Salem, Indiana - - Under cloudy and blistering cold temperatures, Johnny Leonard qualified his No. 13 Boca Bay Builders-Affordable Roofing Chevrolet Monte Carlo 23rd for Sunday's Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200, the first short track event of the 2005 ARCA RE/MAX Series season.
Before time trials, Leonard endured 50 laps in the hour and a half practice session. During the session under the guidance of crew chief Ted Kennedy, Leonard posted a fast lap of 18.2 seconds at 108.416 MPH good enough for 22nd on the speed charts.
"I'm pretty happy with our practice results," said the Cape Coral, Florida native. "Ted (Kennedy) made changes to the car every time we came in and we were faster every time we went back out. I really have a good feeling about the weekend."
In qualifying, Leonard was scheduled to go out 31st, but instead was bumped to 21st. Hustling around the .555-mile bullring, Leonard clicked a lap of 18.143 transferring to a speed of 109.133 MPH. A niche on the second lap of qualifications almost had Leonard bounce the outside wall coming off of turn four, but the veteran driver took quick actions and controlled the machine and completed the lap.
"We're happy to be in the field," said Leonard, a former FASCAR Challenger Series competitor. "The car is really good. I messed up a little on the second lap of qualifying, but hey it's happens. The main thing is that we're in the field and won't be loading up to head home."
With Johnny and the entire Florida Motorsports Group solidly in the field, the team opted to skip the forty-five minutes "Happy Hour" session. "We were happy with the way the car was handling. I don't want to take the chance of something happening in happy hour, we'll just sit it out and watch."
Leonard heads to the track on Sunday looking for his first top-ten finish of the season in addition to a healthy climb in the RE/MAX Series point standings.
The Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 is the third of 23 events on the 2005 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. The race is set to take the green flag Sunday, April 24th, 2005. While the race won't be televised, look for the latest news and results from the track at ARCARacing.com
