Jason Jarrett visits New Jersey school
New Egypt, NJ June 4, 2003 - The New Egypt 500, an idea that spawned from the "Read Across America" Program, concluded this month with a visit by ARCA RE/MAX Series driver Jason Jarrett. Jarrett traveled to the Northeast a day early to join in the celebration at New Egypt Elementary School with the nine hundred school children who participated in the program.
"I have to be at Pocono Raceway tomorrow, but I really wanted the kids to know what a great job they did," said Jarrett, who arranged his travel plans to meet with the students.
Jarrett spent the day with the school's top readers, who combined, read thousands of books between February and June. Together they celebrated the accomplishment, and mutual love of reading.
"I found early on that when I had an interest in something, when I read about, I felt more involved," noted Jarrett. Jarrett also spent some time answering questions about his career, with the highlight of the day being his participation in a make shift pit stop challenge.
Mr. Gary Conk, the Physical Education teacher at NEES, planned a special New Egypt 500 surprise for Jason as well as for Plumsted Township Sr. Patrolman Ernest Freestone, the School Resource Officer. Mr. Conk and the students from the fifth grade class invited Jason and Officer Ernie to race the "gym class racecars" in a one-on-one battle complete with pit stops. The racecars were cleverly constructed of gym mats and wheeled scooters and were dressed up with Jason's team #67 and Dale Jarrett's team #88 numbers and colors.
The racing excitement had everyone on their feet, and was a real crowd pleaser. Even the smile on Jason Jarrett's face seemed like it would have been hard to remove.
"This is by far the most successful reading incentive program we have ever done," noted Phil Meara, the district's Assistant Superintendent.
Jason will be racing at Pocono Raceway on June 7, 2003. He awarded the families of two students with tickets to see the race provided compliments of the ARCA RE/MAX race series.
In return, the children of the school presented Jarrett with a stuffed replica of the schools Mustang mascot, to show there support of him and his race team.
"Hopefully I will take this to victory lane," said Jarrett, who indicated the gift, will ride along with him as he takes to the track at Pocono.
Jason Jarrett is the driver of the #67 ML Motorsports 2003 Monte Carlo sponsored by Gladiator GarageWorks and Damon Motor Coach. Jason is also a member of the Coca-Cola Racing Family.
