Michigan International Speedway Announces 2005 Schedule

BROOKLYN, Mich. -- Michigan International Speedway President Brett Shelton unveiled its 2005 schedule today, which includes a June NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and two ARCA RE/MAX Series races on Fridays in June and August, making both weekends a triple-header. Additionally, the IRL IndyCar Series will return on July 31 and the WSA Snocross Worldwide Championship will return for a second time with a new January date.

"Looking at the 2005 season as a whole and being a huge race fan myself, I think 2005 will offer great variety and great racing for our fans," said Shelton.

The season will kick off January 22 and 23 with the return of the World Snowmobile Association (WSA) Snocross Worldwide Championship, the second winter event in the history of MIS. This year's event has been moved up more than a month and is now the event leading into the X-Games, the WSA's premier event. Last year's event was run in late February.

"We were very impressed with the response we received from our Inaugural Snocross event in 2004," Shelton said. "By moving the event into January, we gain several things, including leading into the X-Games, as well as the hope for better winter-like conditions. We were very impressed with last year's exciting racing and look forward to the return of last year's champions to this years race."

World Snowmobile Association officials will build the course, with several jumps and turns, in the tri-oval grass area in between pit road and the frontstretch. The two-mile oval is not used as any part of the course, but pit road is used as the garage area and hauler parking.

"All the drivers really enjoyed last year's experience and coming to a Superspeedway for the first time," said WSA CEO Scott O'Malley. "Everyone involved with the WSA are really excited about coming back to MIS and having it the final tune-up before the X-games."

The summer race season kicks off on June 17-19 with the Friday June 17 ARCA RE/MAX Series race. The first-ever June NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race will take place on Saturday, June 18, and the MIS opener for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series will take place on Sunday, June 19.

"We are thrilled to have the first ever June NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at MIS," said Shelton. "History was made in this year's Craftsman Truck Series race with Toyota capturing it's first ever Craftsman Truck Series win, and we are proud to be able to offer the series to our June customers. We are also very happy to have the ARCA RE/MAX Series visit MIS twice next season. Since we are located so close to ARCA's home offices, we are looking forward to continuing our long history as ARCA's Superspeedway home."

Ron Drager, President of ARCA, echos Shelton's comments.

The ARCA office is located only an hour's drive from Michigan International Speedway, so we've always considered MIS our hometown superspeedway," said ARCA President Ron Drager. "Race fans in our area know that Friday of NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race week at MIS always has a special feel of excitement. In 2005, it will be even greater with the ARCA RE/MAX Series race. Friday has become a day of tremendous added value for MIS race fans."

The IRL IndyCar Series and the Menards Infiniti Pro Series will make its fourth return trip to MIS with the Mid-Summer Classic, with both races scheduled to run on July 31. Practice and qualifying for both series will take place on Sunday, July 30, making it a two-day weekend in 2005.

"We are very pleased with the growth of the IRL IndyCar Series race in 2004," Shelton said. "To return a great champion like Buddy Rice, who also won the Indianapolis 500, and see the excitement the event brought the past three years, we are looking forward to a great future with the IRL IndyCar Series. We have such a rich open-wheel tradition that it will be great to see a pure open-wheel weekend next July."

The MIS 2005 summer race season will end much like it started, with three races in three days. The ARCA RE/MAX Series will run its second race in 2005 at MIS on Friday, August 19, with the 14th race at MIS for the NASCAR Busch Series scheduled on Saturday, August 20. The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series will close out the season on Sunday, August 21.
