Meet GR Smith...
When you first meet GR Smith he will tell you that the GR stands for 'Great Racer', but with a grin from ear to ear. This 23-year old from Folsom, New Jersey began his racing career only five years ago competing in the D.I.R.T. Sportsman Modified Series at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey. Currently a senior at West Virginia University, Smith will graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Sports Business later this along with climbing behind the wheel of the No. 75 Bob Schacht Motorsports Ford in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, starting with the historical Daytona International Speedway.
Smith is scheduled to compete in a minimum of 14 ARCA RE/MAX Series events in 2005 and perhaps compete in the entire season if sponsorship funding is secured. Currently Smith is focused on a successful outing at Daytona where he plans to turn heads rather than simply be another car on the track.
A competitive spirit is what has driven Smith not only in his racing career, but even earlier as he moved his way through the ranks of hockey at a collegiate level. But racing has been a part of his life and his family history, so his path to the NHL was cut short and a path to the Daytona 500 was initiated. Smith has positioned himself to follow in the footsteps of a racing icon, the late Davey Allison. Smith grew up admiring the fortitude shown by Allison throughout his career and looks to lay down a solid path toward his goals in racing.
Since starting his racing career, Smith has earned nine wins and two championships in D.I.R.T. Sportsman Modified competition. Smith made two ARCA RE/MAX career starts in 2004 running for Bobby Gerhart Racing at Toledo Speedway and Lake Erie Speedway. In each event Smith worked his way into the top ten during the course of the event allowing him to get a true feel for running in the series. Smith proved he is ready for 2005 during December's open test session for the series at Daytona. Smith quickly moved to the top of the time sheets during the drafting practice giving him plenty of confidence heading into the season-opener next month.
This 'Great Racer' is sure to turn heads as he tackles the speedways on the ARCA RE/MAX Series circuit for the first time this season and looks to add even more wins and championships to his resume. The Advance Auto Parts 250 can be seen Live on Speed Channel on Saturday, February 12 from the Daytona International Speedway.
