KIMMEL EARNS ANOTHER SECOND PLACE FINISH AT BERLIN AND REGAINS POINT LEAD
Marne, MI (July 15, 2006) -- Frank Kimmel entered this weekend's race at Berlin Raceway focused on another top-five finish as well as taking over the ARCA RE/MAX Series points lead. When the checkered flag flew on the 200-lap event, Kimmel had accomplished both goals earning a second place finish in his Pork Ford Fusion and regaining the ARCA RE/MAX Series points lead from Bobby Gerhart by 15 points.
Kimmel qualified in the ninth position for the event which was a little disappointing for the seven-time ARCA Champion who had never started worse than eighth at the 7/16-mile Berlin Raceway. However Kimmel admitted that the race track was slick under the sweltering afternoon heat during qualifying and that he expected his race car to adapt well to the changes the track would undergo as it cooled down in the evening. Kimmel wasted no time moving up in the field as the green flag dropped. He made his way up to the third position on lap 62 when the third caution of the day flew and Kimmel would bring his Pork Ford to pit road for fresh tires and fuel. A mishap on pit road would force Kimmel to return to the pits because the front tires were put on the wrong side of the race car. Once the tire problem was remedied, Kimmel would restart in the 15th position with 127 laps remaining in the race event. But because Kimmel pitted earlier in the event than the race leaders, the Pork Racing team found themselves on a different pit schedule.
On lap 124 Kimmel found himself in a four-car battle for the lead with cars on fresher tires. But when the caution flew on lap 162, Kimmel was able to come back down pit road for his final stop of the race and put on fresh tires to take the Pork Ford to the end of the race. The lap 168 restart had Kimmel in the 12th position, but he was able to make quick work of the cars in front of him making his way back to the second position when the checkered flag flew following several additional caution flags.
"We really had a great run tonight with our Pork Ford Fusion," said Kimmel. "The car was right all night, we had a little mishap on pit road early on, but we were able to correct the problem and get back in contention. The car was a little tight in the corners, but we expected that with this race track. There were some pretty exciting moments all night, but thankfully I was able to make my way around. The cautions hurt us some and played into our favor by allowing us to get back in line. We could have taken a few more chances, but I really didn't want to take the chance of wrecking the car. I think if we would have had more racing laps there at the end of the race we might have been able to take the lead back and get the win, but I am so happy for Brian (Keselowski) and the entire Keselowski family for the win tonight. They are a wonderful family and really worked hard for that win. Our Pork Racing team did exactly what we needed to do tonight by finishing second and leading laps. We will head to Pocono with the point lead and that is what we are focused on this season."
Kimmel earned points for leading 33 laps in the event along with his second place finish, he now sits atop the ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship points with a 15 point lead over Bobby Gerhart. The next event on the schedule will take place on Saturday, July 22 from the Pocono Raceway with the green flag scheduled for 1:00pm ET. The race will be televised live on SPEED.
