Daytona Beach, FL, 2-8-01 - Kirk Shelmerdine, in the CLR Ford, captured the Old Milwaukee Pole Award Thursday afternoon for Sunday's Discount Auto Parts 200 at Daytona International Speedway with a speed of 187.352 mph. It was the 2nd consecutive season the Welcome, NC driver has won the pole for the ARCA RE/MAX Series Daytona opener.

Ricky Hendrick, son of NASCAR Winston Cup Series car owner Rick Hendrick, qualified second quickest at 187.169 mph followed by veteran Bob Strait who qualified third at 186.378 mph.

Rookie Stuart Kirby, in his first-ever ARCA RE/MAX Series start, stunned all by equaling Strait's qualifying run of 186.378 mph in a Bob Schacht Motorsports Ford, and will start fourth on the grid.

Defending Daytona winner David Keith, in the Sadler Brothers Ford, completed the top five with a speed of 186.370 mph.
