Thought I'd add some notes on a few "special moments" that I missed including in yesterdays' post concerning my activities at the ARCA 200?
Funniest Moment: While waiting in the inspection line with Mike Buckleys' car, along comes Chris Economacki, carrying an armful of SpeedSport magazines - Chris was talking to everyone, shaking hands handing out copies and soforth. As he approached Mikes' car he tossed a copy into the drivers' seat, looked our way and said "this is for Mike to read when he gets a chance." Larry (the crew chief) turns to Chris and says " aw, don't bother, Mike can't read anyway!"
Scariest Moment: During the race, the #19 Rob Smith car was the next pit - turned out they did not have a pit-board for some reason. They asked if we'd hold ours' out for them, we agreed, they radioed Rob, told him to aim for our board, and he'd need to hit the next pit ( a green-flag stop). Rob came in VERY fast?started the turn for the board and suddenly locked the brakes! The car was coming head-on for our pit! There wasn't time to get the pit-board out of the way - he clipped it at about 60 MPH - the sign smacked several of the #19 crew guys on the wall and the car spun to the infield. Luckily he missed the wall and by some miracle, nobody was hurt.
Saddest Moment: Watching Mike Buckley when he realized that he wasn't going to make the show after second-round qualifying..
Happiest Moment: During the race after fixing the burned plug wire on the #10 car - Glen Taylor got on the radio to say Tim had just run a lap at over 179 MPH - at about the same time, Tim has being closely drafted by the Rick Shepard #12 car - entering the tri-oval, Tim went low coming up on a slower car, the 12 followed, then Tim shot high, leaving the 12 having to back-off the next lap was 180+ on the way up! This race was Tims' first time in traffic or the draft, as he had crashed the car in Wednesday practice after cutting a tire - a naturally talented driver indeed.
Second-Most Happiest Moment: Seeing Andy Hillenburg after winning the race - this guy was so thrilled to be in victory lane! Not just another race to him by any measure, he wanted it, he earned it, and probably still doesn't believe he actually pulled it off!
Most Inspired Moment: Norm Benning who was garaged near us, also did not make the show due to some mechanical problems. He had a really good looking car that appeared to be very well prepared. After we had loaded Buckleys' car in the trailer, I noticed a lot of activity in the ARCA tech-inspection tent. Turned out Norm was checking his car against the Winston Cup rules and was thinking of giving that a shot, seeing as he had missed the ARCA show. I haven't heard anything else about him since - but have to admire the spirit to still keep trying to race!
