The Chase Is On: Montgomery Takes Pole For Discount Auto Parts 200
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Feb. 8, 2002) - Chase Montgomery, competing for the first time at Daytona International Speedway, took the pole on Friday for the 39th annual Discount Auto Parts 200 ARCA RE/MAX Series, which will go green on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The 18-year-old native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., wheeled the No. 27 Montgomery Motorsports Pontiac around the famed 2.5-mile tri-oval at a speed of 184.543 mph. The Pontiac is a former Winston Cup car for Johnny Benson and MBV Motorsports.
"We've had a good car all week," said Montgomery, who was fastest during both winter testing and this week's practice sessions. "The crew has put in an insane number of hours at the shop for the past few weeks to put a good piece under me and it showed. And hopefully there's more to come."
Rounding out the top five were Billy Venturini (184.215), Keith Segars (184.098), Jason Jarrett (183.745) and Bobby Gerhart (183.426). Other notable qualifier include Justin Labonte (eighth, 182.352), Frank Kimmel (11th, 181.822), Rick Carelli (12th, 181.649) and Andy Hillenburg (22nd, 178.866).
Said Venturini: "It was pretty much a complete surprise for us to run that good. We struggled all week. We came here with a really good piece. We expected to be different with the car and then we got here and we struggled. We had some problems: we had a spring that was binding up; we fixed a spring; we had a little piece of junk in the carburetor. When we made those two changes, I didn't know what we were going to have for qualifying."
The Discount Auto Parts will warm up the crowd for the Budweiser Shootout, which will go green at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are still available for all Speedweeks events online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling the Speedway ticket office at (386) 253-7223.
