Cunningham Teams Like Short Track Prospects
Even though Dakoda Armstrong will have a "rookie stripe" on the back of his Cunningham Motorsports/Penske Driver Development Dodge when the ARCA Series returns to Salem Speedway, he won't feel like a rookie. After finishing 3rd last September, Dakoda hopes to improve a few positions and garner his 1st ARCA Series win when the Series returns on April 11 for the Kentuckian Ford Dealers ARCA 200 presented by ApplianceZone.com.
After starting 9th in the 2009 Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA Fall Classic, Armstrong brought the #22 to a podium (or front stretch) finish behind 2010 ARCA champion, Justin Lofton and Cunningham Motorsports teammate, Parker Kligerman. When the teams pull into the .555-mile high bank track in Salem, Indiana, the New Castle, Indiana native will be looking forward to racing at the track since it will allow family and friends the opportunity to see him race. Prior to leaving for Senior Spring Break with some high school friends, Armstrong stated, "I am really excited to return to Salem. Paul Andrews and the #22 crew have been working hard at the shop so that we will have a great car. We will be good. I hope to be leading, instead of following this year (referencing last year). Although, even if you are leading at Salem, there is always someone ahead of you - that you are ready to lap!"
As the ARCA Series returns to very familiar racing at Salem Speedway (ARCA has appeared 86 previous times at Salem), Tom Hessert wants to better his best Salem finish, which was sixth place in 2009. In fact, he is looking for his first ARCA victory at Salem. In four previous stock car Salem races, Hessert has 1 top-6 finish and 2 top-15 finishes. Hessert has also had experience on the high banks of Salem in USAC Midgets and Sprint Cars. When he drove his first stock car at Salem in 2008, he said it was "comfortable. I have always liked Salem. I have a lot of laps on Salem Speedway. With Cunningham Motorsports' success in the fall of 2009, with their 2nd and 3rd place finishes, and my experience here, I expect the #77 team to have a great weekend."
Following his 4th place finish at Palm Beach in the rain-soaked road course race and 15th at Daytona International Speedway in the season opener, Hessert is 5th in the yearlong ARCA Racing Series points. "We are hoping to continue to build on our first 2 races this year. With the testing we have done at Texas Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, we are looking forward to an exciting 3 weeks of racing," added Hessert.
