SunTrust Rookies Stenhouse, Jr., Speed Lead in ARCA RE/MAX Series Chicagoland Open Testing
JOLIET IL (8-19-08) -- Roush Fenway Racing development driver Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., among 15 drivers, unofficially led the speed charts in ARCA RE/MAX Series open testing Tuesday afternoon at Chicagoland Speedway.
Stenhouse, Jr., currently second in national championship points, circled the 1.5-mile superspeedway in 30.390 seconds, for an average speed of 177.690 mph.
Scott Speed, in the Red Bull Toyota, was second fastest overall with an average speed of 176.759 mph.
With just six races left in 2008, Stenhouse, Jr. and Speed are locked in a tight championship points battle headed to the next event on tour -- the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds, the second of two dirt-track races in 2008.
Wildwood, Missouri's Jesse Smith, in the Jones Group Dodge, was third fastest overall with a speed of 173.801 mph.
Former SunTrust Rookie of the Year Chad Blount, a former winner at Chicagoland, posted the fourth fastest speed overall at 173.299 mph.
James Buescher, in the Win-Tron Driver Development Dodge, was fifth quickest overall at 173.188 mph.
Tuesday's open test at Chicagoland was held in preparation for the 8th annual Chicagoland ARCA 200 coming Saturday afternoon, September 6th.
In seven previous ARCA RE/MAX Series events at Chicagoland, there has never been a repeat winner, nor has there ever been a repeat pole winner.
Former Chicagoland winners include Ed Berrier, Blount, Dawayne Bryan, Frank Kimmel, Kyle Krisiloff, Steve Wallace, and most recently Michael McDowell in 2007.
SIM Factory Pole winners at Chicagoland include Blount, Kimmel, Stuart Kirby, Joey Miller, Tim Steele, Wallace and McDowell.
On the heels of a dirt-track thriller on the Springfield mile-dirt last Sunday where Kimmel ended a year-long winless streak, the series heads next to the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in DuQuoin, Illinois for the 56th Southern Illinois 100 on the "Magic Mile" dirt Labor Day Monday, September 1st.
