Chicagoland: Ergon Racing qualifying report

Marc Mitchell and the ...

Marc Mitchell and the #56 Ergon Chevrolet team will roll of from the 19th place. Mitchell, who is a teammate to Clements, is sporting a new crew chief for this weekend's event. 1989 NASCAR Nextel Cup championship crew chief, Barry Dodson, is working with the team this weekend.

Mitchell was the 22nd fastest car in the afternoon practice session. That position, however, was a little skewed. Mitchell sat on pit road, ready to make a mock qualifying run, when the session came to an end. Not only did he miss a chance to climb the practice board, but he also had to make a blind qualifying run when it counted.

"There was a caution right there at the end of practice and we got caught on pit road because of it," said Dodson. "Then we had to make a lot of changes for qualifying. I like to call them 'calculated aggressive' changes. On the flip side, we had to make a blind qualifying run, but we do have a better racecar."

Mitchell was happy with the balance of the car. He just wished he could have had a chance to see how the car would react in qualifying trim.

"We were bottoming out a little in qualifying and that is a result of not getting to make a mock run," sounded Mitchell. "We have a good racecar, though. Barry has brought a lot to our team this weekend."
