A look back-Michigan: SunTrust Rookie of the year contender, John Wes Townley, brought home a less than satisfying 13th-place finish in the rain delayed Racing for Wildlife 200 at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, June 13th. After qualifying eighth and running in the top-five for most of the day in his first-career start on the 2-mile oval, Townley was poised for a top-five finish, but misfortunes on pit road caused the Watkinsville, GA native to play catch-up in the closing laps. As the No. 09 Zaxby's/SPS/Saxon Group Ford Fusion was exiting pit road for what should have been the team's last pit stop of the day, Townley made contact with the No. 20 of Justin Lofton, forcing the No. 09 machine back onto pit road to repair the damage on the right-front fender. Townley restarted 24th with 40 laps remaining and was able to climb back up to 13th position before the checkered flag was waved on the 100-lap event.
After 9: After 9 of the 21 scheduled events in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule, Townley has one top-five and two top-10 finishes; fifth at Kentucky Speedway and 10th at Daytona International Speedway. The SunTrust rookie of the year contender has an average starting spot of 12.78 and an average finishing position of 12.33. He has completed an impressive 1440 out of 1448 laps (99.45%) this season.
Points Check: After a 13th place finish in the Racing for Wildlife 200 at Michigan Int'l Speedway John Wes Townley and the No. 09 RAB Racing team moved from sixth to fifth in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series point standings. Townley currently has 1765 points; only 80 points behind fourth place, Frank Kimmel and 250 points behind leader, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. Robert Benton, owner of the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford Fusion also has 1765 points.
Rookie Race: SunTrust Rookie of the year contender, John Wes Townley is currently tied for fourth in the 2008 SunTrust Rookie of the year battle. Townley and fellow rookie, Tom Hessert III, both have 192 points; 32 points behind third place, Matt Carter and 42 points behind leader, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.
Cayuga Chassis: John Wes Townley will be piloting chassis No. 009 for the inaugural race at Cayuga Speedway Park. This is an RAB Racing Chassis that Justin Marks piloted in 2007 at Berlin, Salem and Winchester. This chassis has also been run in 2008 with John Wes Townley at Salem Speedway where the rookie driver finished 7th and Toledo Speedway where he finished 16th.
Keith Hinkein, Crew Chief of the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford Fusion: "I'm looking forward to our first race at Cayuga Speedway Park. This will be my first time working with John Wes on a short track, but we have a solid short track program and great power from Roush-Yates engines."
John Wes Townley, driver of the No. 09 Zaxby's Ford Fusion: "I didn't have a chance to test at Cayuga, but I'm going there feeling good about our short track program at RAB Racing. I did however, run a Late Model race at Lanier National Speedway Saturday night finishing second in the heat race and the feature. Lanier is a 3/8-mile track and I realize that Cayuga is a .625-mile track, but I believe I can carry the momentum of the solid run I had at Lanier last week to Cayuga this weekend."
