Pocono Honors Adam Petty
By Thomas Chemris
Pocono Raceway is paying tribute to the late Adam Petty by re-naming the Winston Cup garage area in his honor.
Adam, the great grandson of Lee Petty, grandson, of Richard, and child of Kyle. Adam was the only fourth generation athlete to compete in the highest level of his sport.
A feat accomplished in April of 2000 as he qualified and competed in The NASCAR Winston Cup event at Texas Motor Speedway.
Showing all indications that the young Petty would carry on the family legacy, Adam's life was cut short when he was killed in a crash while practicing at New Hampshire International Speedway weeks after his Winston Cup Debut.
"We hate to have it happen this way but we feel real honored that the Mattioli's and the people here at Pocono saw fit to name the garage after Adam", commented Adams grandfather, who holds the distinction of being the winner of the inaugural Winston Cup race at Pocono. The Petty family has a long standing relationship with the facility and the track owners.
Shortly after Adam was killed, Pocono's owner, Dr Joseph Mattioli contacted Adam's parents, Kyle and Patti, and indicated that they would like to honor their son.
With the families consent, the new signs memorializing the young Petty greeted teams as they rolled into the track.
Kyle Petty is appreciative of the honor. " It is just incredible, it is a huge honor, and it is very humbling to walk in the paddock and see Adam's name up over the garage.
The Mattioli family and our family have been tied together in a lot of ways over years, and it is a big honor to have them offer to do that"
