We finally put together a decent run....
The day didn't quite start out too well. We got the car inspected in our pit stall and was tightening bolts, etc. It was time to warm up the motor, it had not yet been timed after installation. A newly installed tachometer wasn't working, and while we were warming up the motor, I was troubleshooting the tach problem. The previous owner of the car had the tach grounded thru the ignition box along with the trigger wire and the faulty tach now had taken out the box. The motor wouldn't run and we were now replacing an MSD box. We got the box wired in time to practice, but we had no tach.
We had brake problems in practice. The pedal was very soft after a lap at speed and I was having problems getting into turn 1. We were running 19.20's on last years worn out tires. The practice session was short, we got the car better, but brakes were still a problem.
Changed the sway bar, set up for qualifying and put on a set of stickers. We decided we had to have a tach and got one off the parts truck. He just loved me that day... Qualified 18.63 for 17th spot, but the crew cheif wasn't happy. The tach said the motor was only turning 7500. Time for a gear change.
The race began OK. We moved up to 10th quickly and missed the first wreck. The motor got up in temperature during that caution but we didn't stop. After the green the temperature began to rise, after 25 laps the motor was p to 260 and we couldn't catch the caution. We pitted under green, cleaned the rubber off the grill and removed some tape. Lost 4 laps in the pit. The motor cooled off and we were OK. Three laps after we got back on the track, the caution flew.
The car was handling great, motor strong, and we could keep up with the leaders except for when they threw on new tires. After 25 laps we were running with them again. Being laps down we pretty much let anyone on the lead lap go and kept racing the others. We finished in 9th place.
We are pretty happy with 9th, but a little disappointed that we had to pit to cool down the motor. We felt we had a solid 5th place car.
Next race on the schedule is Charlotte. We are a little low in funds, so we may have to skip those races and go to Kil Kare and Flat Rock. We still only have the one motor to share between the two cars, and time is short between Charlotte and Kil Kare to be rebuilding.
We'll pull the motor out of the car and fix a few things, see if we can drum up some support for the Charlotte race, or just drop it back in the short car for Kil Kare.
