TIRE PROBLEM COSTS KNUPP GOOD FINISH AT SALEM
(4/24/06 - Mooresville, NC) - Brandon Knupp, driver of the MK Racing/Townsend Engineering Ford had his sights set on the leaders at Salem Speedway. After turning in a strong qualifying effort of 11th on Saturday, Knupp was looking for big results in the Kentuckiana Ford Dealers 200 by Federated Auto Parts on Sunday.
Brandon took the green flag knowing he was going to have to be a little patient until things got sorted out, he was aware that there was going to be a lot of beating and banging right from the start, which proved to be, as cars started bouncing off one another as soon as the green waved. Although Salem isn't Daytona or Talladega the so called "Big One" happened on lap 23 when most of the lead pack were all caught up and entangled in a multi-car crash that ended the day for several of the front runners.
"I don't really know what happened up there with the leaders, but it was big." Said Knupp, "The track was pretty much blocked but I found a hole and made it through."
On the restart, although Knupp was fighting a tight race car, he managed to keep the Townsend Engineering #96 near the front all day. Just past half way on lap 117 while running 6th, Knupp came on the radio and said he had a right front tire going down, before he could make it to pit road the tire blew sending the him hard into the wall in turn 4, doing substantial damage and ending the day early for Brandon and the MK Racing crew.
Brandon said, "I felt the tire going down coming off of turn 2, I tried to get to the bottom but it there was a train of cars, it finally blew there in 4 and I was in the wall. Yeah, I'm disappointed, I think we all are, we had a great car and it was getting better the more laps we ran, we could have had a Top 5 here at Salem or maybe even a victory, but I guess it wasn't my day."
Knupp ended his run behind the wall with a 24th place finish in the ARCA RE/MAX Series event at Salem Speedway.
Next up for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is the Winchester ARCA 200 at Winchester Speedway in Indiana on Sunday May 7.
