Marne, MI, 8-12-00 – New ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series point leader Robbin Slaughter pulled off another near-perfect night. After winning the Hoosier Tire Pole Award, Slaughter, in his Carmen’s Vacuum-NAPA Auto Parts Ford Ranger, overhauled Chad Guinn on the 85th of 100 laps to win the thrilling Berlin ARCA 100 Saturday night at Berlin Raceway.
Slaughter not only established a new one-lap track record, but the veteran Columbus, Ohio driver took over the point lead from Troy Marciniak who fell out early with engine troubles.
In fact, the only thing Slaughter didn’t do was lead the most laps. That honor went to Guinn who had to hustle hard to keep Slaughter in check for most of the way until the eventual winner made his victory move late in the race.
At the onset, Guinn, from outside row one, got the jump on polesitter Slaughter and led with Slaughter, Jeff Speakman, Michael Carter, and Jack Weethee trailing. Slaughter soon began going after the leader while Speakman and Carter swapped back and forth for the third spot. As if in formation, Slaughter, lap after lap, raced to the inside of Guinn in turns one and two inching his bumper ahead down the backstretch until Guinn, with more momentum to the high side powered off the fourth corner to retake the lead. Guinn, seemingly comfortable with Slaughter alongside, finally succumbed to Slaughter’s relentless charge with just 15 laps remaining when Slaughter made his bottom groove maneuvering finally stick.
And all the while Slaughter and Guinn thrilled the near-capacity Berlin crowd, Speakman and Carter raced side-by-side for third until Speakman fell out with oil pump problems after completing 60 laps. Leading Rookie of the Year contender Guinn finished second in front of Carter in third. Joseph Wormcastle finished fourth and won the Ed & Company Hard Charger Award after starting 12th while Dave Reeb, in the Accurate Logistics Ford, finished fifth, the last truck on the lead lap. Johnny Witham finished sixth in AJ Pate’s Ford with Todd Braun, Weethee, Randy Kopka and Stan Maitlen completing the top-10 finishers.
In addition to Slaughter’s winning pay, he also picked up the Revenge Pole-Win Bonus for winning from the pole. Reeb won the Hawk Best Brake of the Race Award while Guinn won the Cloyes Gear Halfway Leader Award. Next up for the ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series will feature double-header action at Winchester Speedway Friday night, August 18 followed up by a trip to Shady Bowl Speedway on Saturday night, August 19.
