MARNE, MI -- Berlin Raceway will welcome the return of the ARCA RE/MAX series on Saturday, May 24, for a 200-lap feature race. The event, the Pork the Other White Meat 200, is presented by GFS Marketplace.
The Pork the Other White Meat 200 entry list includes several exciting names, including Coopersville's Tim Steele, former ARCA champion and 2001 winner of the Pork the Other White Meat 200 at Berlin Raceway, and Berlin Raceway regulars Fred Campbell (2002 ARCA-Berlin winner and 10-time Berlin Raceway Coors Light Late Model champion), Vern Slagh, Billy Shotko, and Chris Anthony. Other big names include ARCA regulars Jason Jarrett, son of 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup champion Dale Jarrett; four-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion and current points leader Frank Kimmel; and the series' youngest competitor, 17-year-old Shelby Howard, who became the youngest ARCA RE/MAX Series winner in its 51-year history with a victory in April at Salem Speedway. Howard, at 16, finished 6th at Berlin in September of 2001.
This year's race will be the 16th ARCA RE/MAX Series event at Berlin since the series first raced here in 1958. Past ARCA RE/MAX winners at Berlin include Bob James and Tim Steele (2 wins); Fred Campbell, Andy Hampton, Iggy Katona, Bob Keselowski, Frank Kimmel, Bob Senneker, Harold Smith, Les Snow, Nelson Stacy, Ramo Stott & Don White (1 win each). ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America) is a touring series known as the most versatile stock car touring series on earth. The stock cars race on all types of tracks and surfaces, from superspeedways such as Daytona to short tracks such as Berlin Raceway to dirt tracks and street and road courses.
The National Pork Board has been involved in the ARCA RE/MAX series since 1999, initially as a co-sponsor Frank Kimmel's car and as an ARCA RE/MAX series sponsor and more recently as a race title sponsor. GFS Marketplace has joined as the presenting sponsor of the Berlin race and, along with Pork The Other White Meat, will host a Rib Cook-Off at Berlin Raceway on Saturday as part of the ARCA festivities. The Rib Cook-Off features 12 local restaurants (see next page) vying for the Fan's Choice Award. Fans are welcome to participate in the free tasting from 4 to 6 p.m. (while supplies last) by the main entrance to the track. Fan judging begins at 6 p.m.
Ticket prices for the Pork the Other White Meat 200 presented by GFS Marketplace are $21 in advance or $22 on the day of the race for general admission and $25 for pit passes. Children ages 3-12 are half price and 2 and under are free. Gates open at 11 a.m. and racing action begins at 7 p.m. Berlin Raceway's Hitches By George Sportsman division will also compete in a points race along with ARCA.
