DANVILLE, VA. -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Superbike series returns to VIRginia International Raceway the weekend of August 17-19, bringing the most exciting two-wheeled racing seen to the historic track in a double-weekend of racing.
The weekend brings together the best motorcycle riders in a double slate of races over three days of action at one of America's most scenic race tracks.
With riders from all over the world on Superbikes capable of speeds in excess of 185 mph on the straights, the Big Kahuna Nationals will pit riders such as Matt Mladin, Jamie Hacking, Ben Spies, Miguel Duhamel, Tommy Hayden and the rest of the Superbike superstars against VIR's challenging 2.25-mile "North Course," where they raced last year in some of the most exciting racing seen all year.
Matt Mladin won both Superbike feature races, taking Saturday's race over fellow Yoshimura rider Ben Spies, earning the winner's laurels by just over nineteen and a half seconds, taking the lead after three laps and holding the point until the finish. Neil Hodgson took third on Saturday.
In Sunday's feature race for Superbikes, Aaron Yates led the first eleven laps, only to have Mladin pass him and lead the final seventeen laps of the race, edging out Yates by 5.279 seconds, followed by Miguel Duhamel in third after he finished tenth in the earlier race.
Joining the Superbike contingent are Supersports, Formula Xtreme and Superstock bikes, plus stunt bikes, an expanded kids' area, Friday night's fun party, live music, plus more activities, and a virtual army of vendors and exhibitors to keep fans entertained.
The world's biggest JumboTron viewing screen will keep you in sight of the action, even if it happens behind you. If the track action is at a pause, there are always the rock climbing wall, the wheelie machine and other off-track attractions to keep guests occupied.
"We're very excited about returning for the third year at VIR," said Cameron Gray, president and CEO of M1 Entertainment, the event's promoters. "We love the track and the event is growing every year.
"Ticket sales this year are already ahead of last year's," he added.
