PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- AMA Pro Racing announced today the addition of a new mile event to the National Hot Shoe Series schedule. The event will take place at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., July 21, with opening ceremonies set for 1:30 p.m.
The track is about 30 miles northeast of Tulsa on Route 44. Built in 1989 this wide-open mile track went through major renovations four years ago and boasts some incredible racer-friendly amenities such as 300-400 recreational vehicle hook up stations. This gives every race team access to electricity and water right in the pit area. And the fans will benefit from the glass-enclosed grandstands and a restaurant that overlooks the track.
"We have a great facility that is a cross between the Del Mar and Springfield Mile tracks," said Promoter Jim Long. "The facility and surface are similar to Del Mar, while the layout of the track is almost identical to Springfield -- wide and fast."
AMA Pro Racing officials Steve Morehead and Bruce Bober recenty inspected the track and tested the raceability of the surface.
"Because this is a horse track we had to scrap off the loose stuff and get down to the clay below," said U.S. Flat Track Manager Bruce Bober. "After Steve (Morehead) put in two laps, we had a lot of rubber on the track." "The track layout is near perfect," said Flat Track Operations Manager Steve Morehead. "It has wide corners and long straights that should provide some classic mile-track action with lots of drafting battles down those long straights."
