AURORA, Ill. (March 14, 2003) - After finishing a career best sixth in the 250cc class at Daytona, Suzuki's Danny Smith, who is a 125cc Western Regional AMA Supercross Series rider, flew home to Boise for a press conference.

"I spend most of the year in California, so coming home means a lot to me," Smith said. "It's fun to go riding here with some of my friends. The closest race to my hometown is in Salt Lake City, so I am going to do some training for that race."

Smith's arrival to Boise attached a slew of local media, including ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and three newspapers. Smith's blazing speed around Chaparral Speedway motivated the sports directors to take a few laps of their own.

"I think they need a few more lessons before they should attempt to qualify for the Salt Lake race," Smith quipped.

With the absence of Suzuki's 250cc riders Travis Pastrana and Sebastien Tortelli, team manager Roger DeCoster gave Smith and Sean Hamblin the nod to represent the yellow team in the full-size class.

"This is only my third race, and I feel very comfortable," Smith said. "I know there are a lot of talented riders who are out, but I look at this as a learning experience."

Two podium appearances have highlighted Smith's 125cc Western regional AMA Supercross Series season. Currently sixth in points, Smith's season was hampered by a crashed in San Francisco that forced him to DNF.

"I am better than sixth," Smith said. "I need to do well in these last two 125cc races."

Smith and the 125cc Western Regional AMA Supercross Series will regroup at Texas Stadium on April 12, and the division will conclude at Smith's hometown race in Salt Lake City on April 26.
