Carlson Repeats as AMA PPG Supermoto Unlimited Champion, as Cini records first-ever Win; Pingree takes AMA Hot Wheels Supermoto Lites Win
CABAZON, Calif. (November 10, 2007) - Graves Yamaha's Mark Burkhart captured his sixth victory of the season during the penultimate round of the AMA Supermoto Championship at Mayhem at The Morongo hosted at the Casino Morongo Resort and Spa. LA Fuels Husqvarna's Adam Cini picked up his first-ever win in M&R AMA Supermoto Unlimited competition, while Troy Lee Designs Honda's David Pingree took his fifth victory in the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites class.
Graves Yamaha's Mark Burkhart, of Pataskala, Ohio, edged out the competition to grab the early lead. Moments later, Troy Lee Designs Honda's Cassidy Anderson crashed in the first turn which resulted in a red flag, forcing a restart.
On the restart, CHM Exhausts Sylvain Bidart, of France, took the lead as Graves Yamaha's Mark Burkhart, HMC KTMs Troy Herfoss, Monster Energy Kawasaki's Chris Fillmore and Troy Lee Designs Honda's Jeff Ward followed closely behind. Burkhart did not waste anytime as he moved into the lead on the first lap.
Burkhart cruised to the win, while Herfoss finished strong in second. Ward worked his way up to finish in third.
"Yamaha has been getting me pumped up all year and I have been riding good and being smart," commented Burkhart. "I have been having a lot of fun this year. I want to thank Yamaha for fully backing me and especially want to thank Doug Henry for coming out and supporting me this weekend."
Rip It Energy Aprilia's Ben Carlson, of West Bend, Wis., jumped to the early lead in the AMA PPG Supermoto Unlimited class presented by M&R Products. HMC KTM's John Lewis, of Brandamore, Pa., and LA Fuels Husqvarna's Adam Cini, of San Diego, Calif, quickly passed Carlson in the early stages of the main event. The race was red flagged on the third lap due to HMC KTM's Kurt Nicoll blowing his engine and leaving oil on the track.
On the race restart, LA Fuels Husqvarna's David Baffeleuf, of France, took the lead followed by Cini. On the second lap Cini made the pass on his teammate and went on to capture the win. Baffeleuf was second while Lewis charged through the field to take third place.
"I wanted to win so bad today", stated Cini, "My goal this weekend was to place on the podium in both my classes and I am so happy to accomplish that today. This track is really fun, but it is also scary with how much speed you have going into some of the corners. Hopefully I can have a great day tomorrow too."
With a fifth-place finish, Carlson secured the 2007 AMA PPG Supermoto Unlimited Championship presented by M&R Products, successfully defending his title with back-to-back championships.
"This Championship feels great", exclaimed Carlson. "I rode smart today and played it sort of safe. This has been such a great season. I want thank my family and team for all their support".
Troy Lee Design Honda's David Pingree, of Temecula, Calif., picked up the holeshot in the Hot Wheels AMA Supermoto Lites main event. Pingree was follow closely by Graves Yamaha's Brandon Currie, of Anaheim, Calif., and LA Fuels Husqvarna's Cini. All three riders pulled away from the field while they engaged in a three-way battle for the lead. Pingree, who was riding with two broken wrists suffered nearly a month ago, was able to hold onto the lead to earn the win. Currie placed second and Cini round out the podium in third place.
"I felt so comfortable in the dirt here", remarked Pingree. "Once the adrenaline wears off I am going to be sore, but the pain is worth the win. I am stoked about this whole event. Troy Lee has made a great track and that was an awesome race. I am looking forward to tomorrow and finishing the season on a high note."
The 10th and final round of the 2007 AMA Supermoto Championship will be held on Sunday at the Mayhem at The Morongo.
