Record Crowd At Trans World Dome For Carmichael's Ninth Consecutive Win 57,872 Fans Watch Pastrana Collect His Fifth Win
St. Louis, Mo. - Round 12 of EA SPORTS Supercross Presented by Speed Stick brought in a record 57,872 fans to witness Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael (Havana, Fla.) extend his winning streak to nine with a dominant win. Teenage superstar Travis Pastrana (Annapolis, Md.) made a triumphant comeback in the 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross Series to win his fifth race of the year and extend his series points lead.
Team Amsoil/Dr. Martens/Competition Accessories/Honda-backed Mike LaRocco (South Bend, Ind.) had the start of his life, battling with Carmichael, who won the $1,000 SFX.com Holeshot Award, for the early lead. The duel didn't last long as Carmichael took off into a blistering pace. Team Mazda Yamaha's Jeremy McGrath, who was in third place, dropped off the pace after a crash. While riding in second place, LaRocco went down and broke his clutch, basically surrendering any chances of making it to the podium. Team Honda's Ezra Lusk (Acworth, Ga.) and Team Suzuki's Kevin Windham (Centerville, Miss.) engaged a heated race for second late in the race, which Windham eventually won. Carmichael won, Windham finished second, and Lusk Finished third.
"I had an awesome start tonight and that paid off," said Carmichael. "It's been nerve racking this year and there have been a lot of things happening, but I just try and win."
The 125cc Main Event started out perfectly for Red Bull KTM's Kelly Smith (Ludington, Mich.) as he jumped out to an early lead over the 22-man field, earning the $500 SFX.com Holeshot Award. After leading for six laps, Team Yamaha of Troy/Fox's Nathan Ramsey made a clean pass to take over the lead. Back in the pack, Travis Pastrana, who came into St. Louis leading the points, was on a mission, charging from a disappointing mid-pack start. Team Yamaha of Troy/Fox's Nick Wey (Dewitt, Mich.) went down in the first turn and ruined any chances of moving up the points scale.
Pastrana moved around Smith at the halfway point and waited until the last lap to make his move. Heading into the lengthy "whoop" section, Pastrana put the hammer down and moved into the lead. Ramsey finished second, and Kelly Smith finished third, for his first podium.
"I am always going to push to the finish no matter what," said Pastrana. "Nathan is a great rider and kept me going out there. This is a great feeling to keep the lead on my side. It's going to go down to the wire"
