Nine In A Row: Round 12 of EA SPORTS Supercross Presented by Speed Stick brought in a record 57,872 fans to witness Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael (Havana, Fla.) extend his winning streak to nine with a dominant win. Teenage superstar Travis Pastrana (Annapolis, Md.) made a triumphant comeback in the 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross Series to win his fifth race of the year and extend his series points lead.
The Next Don: The Pontiac Silverdome, long heralded as one of the legendary supercross stops, is home of the "Michigan Mafia." The Midwest branch of this gang started a generation ago with national winners Mike Hartwig, Eddie Warren, Keith Bowen of Team Dynamic, Todd DeHoop and the Hinkle brothers. This year the Wolverine state will be represented by Nick Wey (Dewitt), Kelly Smith (Ludington), Randy Valade (Howell), and Jimmy Wilson (Willis).
Suzy Homemaker: A crash last weekend in St. Louis forced Team Honda's Sebastien Tortelli to head to a nearby hospital for stitches. Chuck Miller, Team Honda official, laughed when I asked him if Jeff Stanton could sew him up at the semi. Staton's wife, Sarah, is a physical trainer who has helped many riders through nagging injuries. Maybe sewing kits should come standard with race team rigs. Tortelli decided to not race in St. Louis.
Working Class Hero: Team Suzuki's Travis Pastrana, who came into St. Louis leading the 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross Series, qualified for both classes but didn't compete in the 250cc Main Event. Travis wasn't the only Pastrana racing in St. Louis; his cousin Kevin raced in the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge.
Pack The House: Last weekend in St. Louis, attendance reached in all-time high in the TWA Dome with 57,872. The continuing popularity of supercross in St. Louis makes it one of the best stops on the tour.
Seven Or Better: Teenage Superstar Travis Pastrana needs to finish in seventh place or better this weekend to clinch his 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross title. Last year, Pastrana's rookie season, he finished second overall in the series The 125cc Outdoor National Championship trophy on Pastrana's mantle, may be accompanied by his first supercross title trophy.
Finally A Good Start: Mike LaRocco finally came through with a good start last weekend in St. Louis, but a flat tire deleted any chances of the Indiana rider to win his first 250cc supercross main event win. LaRocco's last 250cc supercross win came in 1994.
2001 Win List: Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael has won 10 Main Events and Team Mazda Yamaha's Jeremy McGrath has won two Main Events. McGrath is the all-time winningest supercross rider with 72 250cc wins.
* Jeremy McGrath has won at Pontiac six times during his career, placing him second on the all-time win list for the Silverdome * Bob Hannah won at the Silverdome seven times * Stephane Roncada and Brain Swink are the only riders to win the 125cc Main Event three times at the Silverdome.
