AURORA (February 14, 2003) - THQ World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series invades the Metrodome this weekend as two-time defending supercross champion Ricky Carmichael has a four point lead over Yamaha's Chad Reed in the AMA Supercross Series standings.

Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., has won the two previous 250cc races held at the Metrodome; however, Reed, who won the 2002 125cc Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Series championship, won the 125cc main event at the Metrodome last year.

Last weekend in San Diego, Reed snapped Carmichael's two-race win streak and moved within four points in the series points chase.

"It seemed like I had the whoops down this weekend," said Reed in a press conference after last weekend's race. "I was really motivated. I wanted to get some logs off the fire before they started burning."

And rightfully so. During his 250cc tenure Carmichael, who has led 47 laps this season, has never lost a 250cc points lead after establishing one. Second on the all-time 250cc supercross win list, Carmichael is racing for his 30th-career 250cc main event win. Thus far Carmichael's biggest rival has been himself. A crash after the whoop section last weekend forced Carmichael to play the catch up game.

"In the second set of whoops I went by David, and actually went too fast and missed a whoop," said Carmichael. "My front end went over and I was in third gear and I usually do second gear through the whoops. I got third this time. I made a mistake. It's pretty embarrassing for me, to be quite honest with you."

The 125cc Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Series kicks off this weekend with Factory Connection Honda's Michael Byrne as an early favorite. Byrne, who sat out most of last year's 125cc supercross season due to injuries, competed in the west coast 250cc class, earning two top five finishes and led eight laps. Also in the hunt are Pro Circuit's Mike Brown and Suzuki's Branden Jesseman.
