AURORA, Ill. (March 25, 2003) - The race between Yamaha's Chad Reed and Honda's Ricky Carmichael has been refueled as THQ World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series makes its introductory stop at Houston's new Reliant Stadium. A press conference will be held at Reliant Stadium on Thursday from Noon-2:00 p.m., featuring Factory Connection Honda's race team.
Last weekend's race in St. Louis saw Reed, who has been winless in the past four races, win his fourth race of the season, beating two-time defending champion Ricky Carmichael. In the 20-lap main event, Reed and Carmichael traded positions for the lead six times in the first five laps. Reed, who posted the fastest lap time in Heat 1 (52.2 seconds), won the main event by more than six seconds.
Leading by 22 points in AMA Supercross Series points, Carmichael, who has seven wins on the season, has won the last two races in Houston. Reed leads the THQ World Supercross GP points standings by 38 points over his teammate David Vuillemin.
In 125cc Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Series action, Suzuki's Branden Jesseman won his third race of the season in St. Louis, extending his series points lead to 10 over Kawasaki's Mike Brown.
Reliant Stadium is part of the newly formed Reliant Park complex, which includes the Reliant Astrodome, Reliant Arena, Reliant Hall, and Reliant Center. The five facilities in Reliant Park offer more than 300 acres of space and have an anticipated event inventory of more than 400 events per year, exceeding all other sports, entertainment and convention complexes in the country.
Reliant Stadium, which opened August 24, 2002, is a 69,500-seat facility and features the world's first retractable roof football stadium with a natural grass playing surface for football. Reliant Stadium is home to the Houston Texans NFL franchise, as well as the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Clear Channel Entertainment's Motor Sports events, many concerts and Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004.
The Houston stop of THQ World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series has been a part of the schedule since March 15, 1974 when Jim Pomeroy won his first supercross race. Seven-time supercross champion Jeremy McGrath holds the record for most wins in Houston (five).
The final round of THQ World Supercross/AMA Supercross Series will air on ABC's Wide World of Sports Sunday, May 4.
