Carmichael rolls on to third consecutive win.
Stewart wins fourth-in-a-row at Edison International Field.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (February 1, 2003) - Honda's Ricky Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., edged out Yamaha's Chad Reed by only a half a second en route to his third-consecutive THQ World Supercross GP/AMA Supercross Series win. James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., won his fourth-consecutive 125cc Western Regional AMA Supercross Series race, extending his series points lead to 28 points.
Honda's Michael Byrne, of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and his teammate Mike LaRocco, of South Bend., Ind., each won their respective SXGP.com holeshot awards. The split start at this race allowed riders to choose from two different lanes in addition to competing for 2 separate awards. Byrne led the first nine laps with Kawasaki's Ezra Lusk and Carmichael close behind. On lap five, Carmichael made his move to second and on lap nine moved into the lead. Reed, coming up from behind, took and held on to second but was denied on his last-ditch effort for the lead. Carmichael passes Ricky Johnson for second place on the all-time 250cc win list with 29.
"I made a mistake out there and he (Reed), caught up to me," said Carmichael. "I knew I had it in me to do what I needed to do. I put the wood down tonight."
Stewart, who rides for Kawasaki, passed SXGP.com holeshot winners Tiger Lacey and Eric Sorby on lap one. Kawasaki's Sorby held down second with reigning 125cc Western Regional AMA Supercross Series champion Travis Preston, of Hesperia, Calif., in third. The win for Stewart marked his second-ever at Edison International Field.
"How could you go slow out there tonight with all of these fans rooting for you," said Stewart. "I dedicate this win to the families of the astronauts of the Space Shuttle Columbia."
