Path Valley Short Track riders turn right and jump

Spring Run, PA_ Turn left, go fast. That's the standard instructions for flattrack motorcycle racing. Sunday at the Path Valley TT race, riders had to also turn right and go over a jump.

The return of Richard Mellinger of Paradise to the AMA winners circle after a bad fall and hospitalization for spinal injury last season highlighted the AMA Northeast Nationals Tourist Trophy (TT) racing sponsored by Roxy's Cycles of Fayetteville Sunday at the Path Valley Speedway Park.

Mellinger won in both the 30 Plus and the 450cc Modified features to secure Nationals championships and a spot at the Grand Nationals of the AMA June 30 through July 5 in Springfield Illinois. He had also won the Short Track feature in the 30 Plus class the night before.

Unlike the Short Track flattrack races, the TT race includes a chicane serpentine off turn two, a jump and then an S-turn back to turn three with two right-hand turns that many riders never encounter. The top teenage and younger riders like Bailey Spence, Tyler Kidwell, Austin Greenland and John Lewis V handled the challenge with aplomb, winning their favorite class features. Although many riders fell on the course, the standby ambulance was not required to transport them.

The AMA Northeast Nationals consist of three feature events, including the Short Track, Tourist Trophy and Half Mile. The Pro/Am Half Mile races will be run June 8 at the Williams Grove Speedway and the results from all three will be totaled for the overall championships. The Northeast National champions get to use a #1 bike plate and those in premiere divisions also receive travel assistance to the Grand National championships on the Springfield Illinois state fairgrounds.

This year the AMA premiere classes are the 50cc Senior for 7-8 years old, 65cc Modified 7-11, 85 Modified 7-11, 125 Modified, 250 Modified, 450 Modified, 505 Modified, and the 30+ Open Singles.

According to John Winsett Sr. of Two Wheel Promotions, which produces the Path Valley and Williams Grove AMA races, more than 200 riders can be expected for the June 8 Half Mile Pro/Am race. Gates open at 10 a.m. for the Williams Grove race.

For information on flattrack motorcycle and four-wheeler racing, call the track at 717-349-7111 or AMA director and Two Wheel Promotions partner John Winsett at 717-426-4756.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717-349-7111.
