Spring Run, PA_ Everybody won Saturday as Two Wheel Promotions kicked off the AMA Pro Am Northeast National Championship races with a pig roast and bike rodeo.
Sponsored by B&B Sales and Service of Lancaster, a KTM and Yamaha dealer, the rodeo was set to provide fun for the many families attending the races Saturday night and Sunday and to reduce tensions among the youngsters entering the highly competitive national events.
"AMA flattrack racing is a wonderful family sport and an event like this bonds all of the families that are competing and racing so hard on the track," said promoter Ken Geesey. "Everyone wins and everyone has a good laugh to start off the serious national racing."
The events scheduled included a barrel roll for bikes and also for four-wheelers, rolling the barrel between two lines without going completely outside them. The serpentine race involved weaving left and right through a line of pylons. The slow drags was a contest to finish the course last without falling over. The golf ball put was a course of pylons with golf balls on the top and the competitors were to pick them all up on their first pass and then put them back on the return trip.
Team events put families and competitors together and the balloon toss was a simple pass under a rope with the rider going as slow as possible and the passenger throwing a water balloon over a rope, and then catching it. The new event from last year's rodeo was a hoop toss involving three people. The rider tossed a waterball through a hula hoop held by one helper and a second helper was supposed to hit it with a foam float -- without knocking the rider off the bike.
The top three in each event, listed below, won trophies from B&B Sales & Service and certificates for other prizes from a host of sponsors.
The actual racing for the AMA Northeast Nationals Championships included the Short Track features Saturday and the Tourist Trophy (TT) races Sunday and conclude June 8 at Williams Grove Speedway with the Half-Mile. The overall Northeast Nationals champions, who receive special honors from the AMA and at the Progressive Insurance AMA Grand Championships in Illinois June 30 to July 5, will earn their titles based on all three event finishes.
The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717-349-7111.
