AMA Riders Win National Honors at Path Valley Saturday
Spring Run, PA_ Riders from five states won national recognition Saturday in the AMA Northeast Amateur Short Track Nationals at the Path Valley Speedway Park.
While riders from eight states competed, the majority of the winners are from Pennsylvania and AMA Region 6.
Produced by Two Wheel Promotions, the races for 28 classes of bikes and four-wheelers are recognized as official national championships by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and winners in eight premier classes are awarded travel assistance money to the 2004 AMA Progressive Insurance Dirt Track Grand Championships at the Illinois State Fairgrounds June 27 through July 4.
All of the winners are permitted and encouraged by the AMA to display a yellow on blue #1(NE) number tag on their vehicles, but while riders can enter up to three events, they are only permitted a travel assistance grant for one premier class win. The premier class winners are also seeded into guaranteed heat race starting spots at the Grand Nationals before the remainder of the field is set.
The 2004 premier classes are: 50cc Senior, 65cc Modified, 85cc 7-11 Modified, 250cc 2-Stroke Modified, 250cc 4-Stroke Modified, 450cc, 505cc Modified, and 30+ Open Singles.
Many of the riders in victory lane had won past nationals, but only one rider won in two premier events. John Lewis V of Brandamore won both the 450 Modified class and the 250 Modified 2-Stroke feature, both popular classes with large fields of riders.
The Short Track feature is part of a three-day program of AMA racing that also includes a Tourist Trophy or Scramble race through right turns and a jump at Path Valley on Sunday and a Half-Mile race Memorial Day Monday at the Williams Grove Speedway. Riders are awarded plaques, trophies and national honors for each of the three events and overall Northeast Championships for their combined finishes in all three.
