Path Valley hosts National Amateur Motorcycle Championships.

Spring Run, PA_ The AMA motorcycle and four-wheeler races this weekend and next at the Path Valley Speedway Park have been re-designated by the sanctioning American Motorcyclist Association as the Northeast Amateur National Championships.

The May 25 and May 26 at Path Valley and June 2 at Hagerstown were originally planned as qualifiers for the AMA Grand Championships, but are now among five regional events designated as the 2002 AMA Dirt Track Amateur Nationals.

"We are pleased and proud that the AMA has recognized our track and program as worthy of a national championship race," said John Winsett, a partner in Two Wheel Promotions, which operates the Path Valley track. Winsett is also a director of the AMA District 6.

"Those who win at our Path Valley and Hagerstown races will officially be national champions," said Path Valley Promoter Ken Geesey, "and all who race will also qualify to enter the Grand Championships June 30 through July 7 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds."

Three motorcycle and quad races in three distinctly different styles compose the National Championships. The short track race will be May 25 and the TT Scrambles will be May 26 at Path Valley. Then on Sunday June 2 Two Wheel Promotions will stage the half-mile race at the famed Hagerstown Speedway.

"We deeply appreciate the cooperation of Mr. Frank Plessinger in allowing us to rent the Hagerstown track, and we hope our amateur races will enhance his pro races when the AMA Progressive Insurance Grand National Track Series comes to the Hagerstown Speedway the day before, Saturday, June 1st," Winsett said.

Those are all official AMA races. After church services Sunday the bikers will hold a rodeo with events like a balloon pass from bike to bike, a slow drag with the winner being the last bike across the line without falling over, and a golf ball cones race where the riders pick up golf balls off the top of traffic cones -- and then put them back!

To further strengthen the Northeast Amateur National Promoter Geesey has added a strong field of sponsors for both weekends. Black Arrow Racing is the general sponsor for the Saturday short track race at Path Valley. Roxy's Cycles sponsors the Sunday Bike Rodeo and Pig Roast, and Bromley Suzuki sponsors the Sunday evening TT Scramble. Additional cash, merchandise and contingency sponsors include East Coast ATV of Palm PA for the quads and flat track races, M&S Cycles of Chambersburg for the kids race trophies and medals, and Gas Custom Signs of Waynesboro, Chilcote's Custom Pain of Chambersburg, arrow Cycle Transport of Spring Run, and R.D. Greenland and Son Masonry of Spring Mills.

ABBA Services and Two Wheel Promotions are the general sponsors of the half-mile race at Hagerstown and additional sponsors include Schaeffer's Harley Davidson, Bromley's Suzuki, Action Motorsports, B&B Cycle, Appalachian Harley Davidson, Roxy's Cycles, M&S Suzuki and Honda, Lexus of Cherry Hill, and AD Leathers of Hagerstown.

More sponsors are signing on every day and this promises to be one of the biggest and richest amateur races ever held on the east coast, according to Geesey.

The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717-349-7111. The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike.
