Mladin to defend Superbike wins in Yamaha Superbike Challenge at California Speedway
FONTANA, Calif. (March 31, 2004) --- AMA Chevrolet U.S. Superbike Championship presented by Parts Unlimited rider Mat Mladin is set to defend both of his 2003 California Speedway superbike victories this weekend during the third annual Yamaha Superbike Challenge.
"My team is always ready," said Mladin, "We tested [at California Speedway] and things went pretty well. It will be tough at Fontana, but I think we can do a double."
The Australian native claimed the top qualifying spot in last year's doubleheader and didn't slow down from there. During the Yamaha West Region Dealers 100k, Mladin flew away from the field, gaining more than eight-tenths of a second per lap, to take the checkered flag with margin of victory of 14.965 seconds. He set a new track race record last year, with an average lap speed of 95.427 mph. During the Yamaha 100k, Mladin was assessed a stop-and-go penalty for rolling at the start, but that didn't stop him as he went on to win with a margin of victory of 6.373 seconds.
"Fontana is quite a good race track," Mladin continued. "I like racing there, the safety crew is pretty good. I enjoy the layout and it's close to home, just 10 minutes away [from my home during the season]. I prefer to go to Fontana where it's safe."
Mladin, along with the rest of the Superbike field, will qualify for Saturday's Yamaha West Region Dealers 100k on Friday at 4:20 p.m. They will qualify for Sunday's Yamaha 100k at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Saturday's 28-lap race around the 21-turn, 2.36-mile motorcycle competition course starts at 3:40 p.m. Sunday's race begins at 2:00 p.m.
