On Saturday August 7th, at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds in Victorville, California, all of the top Speedway motorcycle racers in the nation will be on hand to compete for National Championship title. John Aden will once again be heavily involved in the national, but this time not a as racer.
If you can flashback to 1992, you might recall that one of the hottest new Speedway Motorcycle racers in southern California was a good-looking young lad named John Aden from Hesperia, California.
This guy could manhandle one of those skinny, brakeless, two wheeled, fire-breathing, methanol-belching motorcycles with the best of them. He won the speedway racing motorcycle Rookie Of The Year award in '92. Well, Arden^Òs going around and around the track again ^Å But this time on a different vehicle and no where near as fast. But his new ^Óride^Ô is, perhaps the most important one of all for this world-watched event!
Just for the record, the event's proper title is (take a deep breath now): Harley-Davidson of Victorville brings you round two of the AMA sanctioned Speedway Motorcycle National Championship presented by Progressive Insurance.
It simply is a critically important evening of this super style of slideways motorphsyco racing. At least four riders who currently live and race full time in Europe are returning to California just for this for this series (truth be told, two of them are coming back to pick up some clean laundry too) and the outcome of the whole evening of racing will depend on how well the aforementioned John Aden does his assignment.
"John Aden is definitely the right guy for the track prep job at Victorville." said Harald Zechner, the co-producer of this AMA national event. Zechner added, "Combining his credentials as a top flight speedway racer with his thorough knowledge of the dirt track at the fairgrounds, there is just no question, we^Òve entrusted the racing surface to the right guy in John."
The preparation of a motor racing dirt track is part (black) art and part (weird) science, some of the labor is plain old back-breaking, while other tasks are simply monotonous. There^Òs tractor time, water truck time, and sometimes a shovel is the weapon of choice. Timing is everything. The water you put down on Thursday evening will affect the track condition on Saturday evening. And your biggest enemies while prepping a dirt racing surface are weather related ^Å All in all it^Òs a daunting job that no one even takes mind of if the track stays perfect all night. You need to have broad shoulders and a very tractable ego, both of which Arden is know for.
John Aden knows all of the pitfalls, he has prepared Wheel-2-Wheel Raceway in Victorville dozens of times. "The fastest two wheel guys in the world are coming to this track and we'll be ready for them." says Aden. He will.
In his spare time John Aden has recently taken up four wheel racing and has worked hard to champion the existence of Speedway Sprint Cars (500cc singles with four wheels and roll cage). John is not alone; there are dozens of families involved in the sport. They have a racing date on the following Saturday (Aug 14) at the very same Victorville Fairgrounds facility.
