AURORA, Ill. - SFX Motor Sports' EA SPORTS Supercross Presented By Speed Stick will award, for the first time ever, a $100,000 mid-season points fund at Round 8 in New Orleans, La., this weekend, based upon the 250cc riders mid-season points standings.
The mid-season points fund, part of the $325,000 season points fund, will be distributed to the top 20 riders who have excelled at the halfway mark of the 16-round series that concludes in Las Vegas. At the final round of the series, an additional $225,000 points fund will be awarded to the top finishing 250cc riders. The combined $325,000 series points fund is the largest points fund in the history of EA SPORTS Supercross.
The 2001 season for the EA SPORTS Supercross Presented by Speed Stick, just got bigger, with more than a million dollars up for grabs in the 16-round tour. Entering its 27th-year of competition, supercross offers the largest purse in history - $1,081,850 - and a record-breaking $2,109,350 of combined purse and bonus money.
The current 250cc season points standings after Round 7:
1) Ricky Carmichael 167 pts
2) Jeremy McGrath 158 pts
3) Mike LaRocco 129 pts
"The EA SPORTS Supercross mid-season points fund is a new addition to the 2001 supercross season," said Todd Jendro, Director of Supercross, SFX Motor Sports, "The riders are now walking away with an additional combined $100,000 at the halfway-point of the season courtesy of SFX Motor Sports."
