PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Nov. 17, 2003) -- AMA Supercross and 250 Motocross Champion Ricky Carmichael, 23, of Havana, Fla., has earned the final nomination for the 2003 AMA Pro Racing Speed Channel Athlete of the Year Award. Carmichael is the defending winner of the award and has the opportunity to become the first rider to win the coveted title three years in a row. He could also become only the second rider to win the Athlete of the Year Award three times. Nine-time AMA Grand National Champion Scott Parker is the only rider in the history of the award to accomplish that feat.

Carmichael is coming off yet another stellar season. In May he joined AMA racing legends Bob Hannah and Jeremy McGrath as the only riders in series history to win three straight AMA Supercross titles. In September Carmichael continued his remarkable championship winning streak by earning the title in the 250 class of the AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship. The season was also significant in that Carmichael passed legendary Jeremy McGrath on the AMA's all-time combined motocross and supercross wins list with a victory at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, Pa., in May. Carmichael, who rides for Honda, ended the season with a total of 96-career AMA wins.

Carmichael capped off the season by taking the overall victory in the 2003 Motocross des Nations, beating multi-time world champion Stefan Everts in front of Everts' home crowd in Belgium. Team USA finished second to Belgium in the prestigious Olympic-like competition.

"It's an honor to be nominated again for the Athlete of the Year," Carmichael said. "I faced some strong challenges this year in both supercross and in the nationals, which made this season interesting for both the fans and myself. Representing my country in the Motocross des Nations was another highlight of the year. It's definitely a season I'll always remember fondly."

Tune in to 2 Wheel Tuesday on the Speed Channel, Tuesday night at 10:30 p.m. (EST) where host Greg White will feature this week's nominee.
