BUDDS CREEK, Md. (July 12, 2008) -- As the opening day of on-track action came to a close on Saturday for the Monster Energy Budds Creek Motocross National, two familiar names sat atop the charts. Series' points leaders, Monster Energy Kawasaki's James Stewart and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto, set the day's fastest times in practice and qualifying at round seven of the 2008 Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF.
Stewart posted a blistering lap of 1:55.017, holding a three-second advantage over second place, teammate Tim Ferry. A three-time winner at Budds Creek in the AMA Motocross Lites class, Stewart is in search of his first overall title in the AMA Motocross class at the famed circuit.
"Budds Creek is my favorite track," said Stewart. "It's a little different this weekend because they are running it backwards. My bike is really good and I'm just concentrating on getting a good start and riding a clean race tomorrow."
Ferry clocked in a lap of 1:58.448 with Red Bull Honda's Andrew Short following in third with a time of 1:58.749.
After a two event absence from the head of the AMA Motocross Lites class, Villopoto returned to the top of the practice charts with an impressive lap of 1:57.216. He currently is unbeaten at Budds Creek and will gun for his third straight overall victory on Sunday.
"Budds Creek is a different track every time we come here," explained Villopoto. "Today it was really rutty and difficult in spots, but that is the way I like it. It looks like it could harden up overnight and be very fast and slick tomorrow. Either way I'll be ready to run up front and keep working on my points lead."
MDK/KTM's Ryan Sipes continued a recent string of impressive runs with the day's second-fastest lap at 1:58.918 while Geico Powersports Honda's Trey Canard rounded out the top three with a lap of 1:59.572.
