PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The 2001 AMA National Champions Awards Banquet will take place this Friday, Dec. 7, at the Desert Springs Marriott Resort & Spa in Palm Springs, Calif. The Awards banquet is the annual gathering of champions from all categories of AMA professional and amateur racing.

Highlighting the evening's festivities will be the presentation of the 2001 AMA/Speedvision Pro Athlete of the Year Award. Eric Bostrom (Pro Honda Oils 600 SuperSport Champion), Ricky Carmichael (AMA EA Sports Supercross and Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Champion), Chris Carr (Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Champion) and Mat Mladin (AMA Chevy Trucks U.S. Superbike Champion) are this year's nominees.

The banquet, emceed by Motorcycle Hall of Famer Larry Maiers, and AMA flat track racing announcer, J.B. Norris, is a colorful and festive affair complete with video highlights from the racing season.

In addition to the much-anticipated AMA/Speedvision Athlete of the Year Award, other prestigious awards will be announced at the banquet such as the Award of Mechanical Excellence given to the top racing tuner or builder, Professional Sportsman of the Year given to the rider who displays great sportsmanship and the AMA Sports Athlete of the Year award to the top rider in the amateur ranks.

Also honored at this year's banquet will be AMA Rookies of the Year from Superbike, Flat Track and Supercross/Motocross. Manufacturers of the Year will be presented as well.

On Saturday following the banquet will be a day of golf benefiting the Road 2 Recovery Foundation, which helps professional riders who suffer career-threatening injuries while racing. The Road 2 Recovery Foundation is dedicated to providing financial, motivational, emotional and spiritual support to AMA Pro Racing-licensed members in the event of a career-ending injury. This fundraiser will also be held at the Marriott Desert Springs, on the Palm Golf Course. The entry fee of $200 includes 18 holes of golf on this premier course plus a special gift package.
