CORSA MOTORSPORTS LE MANS CLASS 1 PROTOTYPE CHALLENGER BREAKS COVER.
TOOELE, Utah (May 13, 2009) -- The long awaited test debut of the Corsa Motorsport Ginetta Zytek 09SH took place at Silverstone last Tuesday. Current Corsa contracted driver Johnny Mowlem gave the car it's initial shakedown prior to it's being shipped out to Salt Lake City in time for the next round of the American Le Mans Series, one of the world's premier sportscar championships.
What makes this racing car so unique is that it is one of the first of it's kind to run with a combination petrol and electric engine, hence it's hybrid label. Mowlem has been the primary development driver for the Zytek hybrid and was conducting vital initial test work with a view to demonstrating the car at the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix on May 17, held at Miller Motorsports Park.
Mowlem gave a pit lane demonstration using electric power, then took the car around the entire Stowe Circuit at Silverstone, again solely under electric power. The real beauty of this system is that the racecar can be programmed to run as either a normal LMP1 or as a hybrid, invaluable for a system that is at an early stage of it's development.
"I'm absolutely delighted that the car ran so well at it's first ever track test." Mowlem said. "It's a testament to all the hard work from everybody at Ginetta Zytek that technology as new and as complicated as this could run so well and effectively on it's debut. That is just reward to all the lads for all the months of effort they have put in, and they deserve all the credit. This now allows us to take this brand new technology and demonstrate it at Miller Motorsport Park. This is very important for team owner Steve Pruit and the whole Corsa Motorsport team, as it is the home track for this team. This car is a technical marvel and it is going to turn a lot of heads."
Mowlem will share the driving duties for the rest of the championship with ex Ferrari and McLaren Formula One driver, Stefan Johansson. The pair has driven as a team for Corsa Motorsports since the second half of the 2008 season.
The car will cross the Atlantic aboard a Virgin Cargo transport plane, then travel by truck from Las Vegas, Nevada to the team in Utah. Factory Zytek staff will be on hand in force to ensure that any time the car runs as a hybrid it is properly functioning and all runs smoothly
