MOWLEM, CORSA FOURTH AT ST. PETE; LONG BEACH NEXT
LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 8, 2008) -- Johnny Mowlem and the Corsa Motorsports team head for the famed Long Beach street circuit, buoyed by the team's successful effort in the American Le Mans Series race at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Mowlem and co-driver Gunnar Jeannette drove the team's Ferrari to a fourth place finish in the GT2 class. The team will compete in the Tequila Patron ALMS race, which is part of the Long Beach Grand Prix weekend April 19.
"Fantastic," said Mowlem said of the St. Petersburg finish. "It was an excellent result, given that we had only Friday's practice session to test the car on the tire that Dunlop provided. The car performed well and I couldn't be happier for Steve Pruitt and all of Corsa Motorsports that we were able to come to St. Petersburg and come so close to the podium. It's really pleasing and simply fantastic."
The team steadily improved the car in both sessions before qualifying, where Mowlem set a fine lap to qualify on the fourth row, only 1.5 seconds off the pole. In the first 30 minutes he worked his way up to fifth place, which became fourth when Mika Salo pitted early in the leading Risi Ferrari due to heat exhaustion.
Mowlem was also suffering but managed to hold on until the first full course caution. Unfortunately the teams' strategy didn't pay off as Johnny was called to the pits before the waveby, resulting in the team losing a lap and Gunnar Jeanette re-joining in 7th after the pit stop. Having said that, some good driving from Gunnar and a number of incidents for their rivals, promoted the Corsa Motorsports team back up to a deserved fourth place finish by the end.
Mowlem has not raced at Long Beach before but the Southern California venue has been on the British star's wish list for many years.
"I've raced on many street circuits, but Long Beach is one you hear about, especially here in the States" Mowlem said. "I know the organizers put on a great event and I am really pleased to finally be part of it."
