Shane Lewis instructs Secret Service in driving tactics.
JUPITER, Fla., Tuesday, September 10, 2002 - Shane Lewis has spent a career honing his skills behind the wheel of a race car. Since very early in that career the Jupiter, Florida resident has been teaching those skills to others. Recently, Lewis, lead instructor for the Justin Bell GT Motorsports Experience Racing School, has been lending his considerable talents to the "War on Terrorism" by instructing agents of the United States Secret Service in high performance driving tactics. The classes have taken place at Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach, Florida.
"When I was approached about working on this program I immediately realized the impact of what I would be teaching," said Lewis, a 16-time 24-hour race participant. "To be this close to the anniversary of September 11th really helps to remind you just how important this is. Knowing that what I am training may very well help protect the president is almost impossible to comprehend. I just hope that these agents never have to use the skills we've covered. It is one of the great privileges in my life to be able to work with these fine agents."
The Secret Service was started as a division of the Treasury Department shortly after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Agents of the Secret Service have multiple tasks but are most commonly recognized as the primary source of protection for the president and vice-president of the United States, their immediate family as well as former presidents and their families.
"Every agent has been incredible to work with," offered Lewis on the experience. "They are amazingly gifted behind the wheel. They have a different driving style than we traditionally teach because their mission is to get the president to a safe place as quickly as possible, not get to a checkered flag first. Keeping that in mind helped me tailor a program to their specific needs."
Shane Lewis has been racing since 1989. He is the 1998 Professional Sports Car Rising Star award winner and has multiple race wins in the IMSA Supercar and SCCA Pro series. This former Daytona Endurance Champion has driven in 16 24-hour races including two 24 Hours of Le Mans, six 24 Hours of Daytona and six 12 Hours of Sebring. In 2002, he is competing as the lead driver for the #43 Orison Marketing/ Planet Earth Corvette Z06 in the GS I class of the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series and is also racing in the American Le Mans Series.
