Sascha Maassen/Lucas Luhr Give Alex Job Porsche Second Straight Gt Win, And 60TH Victory At 50TH Running Of MOBIL1 12 Hours Of Sebring
SEBRING, Florida -- March 16, 2002 -- Alex Job Racing, a veteran Porsche team from nearby Tavaras, Florida, repeated as GT class champions at the Mobil1 12 Hours of Sebring endurance sports car race. German drivers Sascha Maassen and Lucas Luhr duplicated t heir win from 2001 in the exact same #23 Alex Job Racing McKenna Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
For Lucas Luhr, who also won the class with Dick Barbour Racing in 2000, he joins an exclusive club of four other drivers who have won Sebring three years in a row. Luhr joins Johnny O'Connell, John Morton, Steve Millen and David Loring.
"Of the three wins, this was definitely the hardest," said Luhr. "It was as much a battle against the heat as it was against the race track or the competition."
"We had added some additional cooling vents and an auxiliary fan in anticipation of the hot weather," added Maassen, "but the fan quit for the middle part of the race. However, the car was so well prepared that all we had to struggle with was the heat. E ven though it was last year's car, the #23 Alex Job Racing Porsche felt brand new."
Alex Job Racing has now won at Sebring three of the last four years.
According to track archives, Porsche has now scored 60 wins (including 17 overall victories) at Sebring starting with the Porsche RS 60 in 1960. Ferrari is second with 12 overall wins.
It was a bittersweet night for the Alex Job team, however, as the team's #22 Porsche with Timo Bernhard/Jorg Bergmesiter/Marc Lieb at the helm, had flywheel problems with less than 45 minutes to go in the race, pushing them down to ninth place in the stand ings.
The #52 Seikel Motorsport Porsche of Hugh Plumb/Andrew Bagnall/Philip Collin finished second, with the Fabio Babini/RobinLiddell/Giovanni Anapoli third and the #67Larry Schumacher/Jim Pace/Bob Nagel Racers Group Porsche finishing fourth.
Porsche captured all top 10 positions in the GT class.
