Both Panoz Machines in Top Six in Sebring 12 Hour Qualifying
Panoz Motor Sports' pair of "Spirit of America" prototype machines will line up for Sunday's 50th Anniversary of the 12 Hours of Sebring in fourth and six positions after the conclusion of qualifying today.
David Brabham qualified the #50 car in fourth place with a fastest time of 1 minute, 50.61 seconds. Bryan Herta's first qualifying effort in American Le Mans Series competition netted him 6th place with a time of 1:51.07.
Frank Biela earned pole for Audi ahead of the the sister factory car of Dindo Capello. Johnny Kane pulled out the surprise of the session by putting the LMP675 MG Lola in third spot.
"My fastest lap could have been a little better, but not a big amount," Brabham said.
"I tried to have another crack at it, but kept having problems with traffic. I had one car that kept getting in my way when I was trying to get a clear lap.
"Overall the car is pretty good and I think we are in fairly good shape for Saturday's race.
"Speed through the traffic is going to be the real secret. There are a lot of cars here and maintaining a good rhythm is going be very important."
Brabham will share the #50 car with regular partner, Jan Magnussen, and two-time Sebring winner, Eric van de Poele.
Herta will form an all-USA crew with fellow Americans David Donohue and Bill Auberlen.
"I was really frustrated in traffic because I reckon there was a lot of extra time in the car," Herta said.
"But at the end of the day, 6th is not too bad. It is a very long race on Saturday and we have a good opportunity by starting towards the front of the pack.
"We have really improved our car in the past couple of sessions and I am really looking forward to my first endurance event of this type."
Both cars will complete the first night practice session this evening at 8.00pm, followed by a single one-hour session tomorrow morning. Saturday's race will commence at 10.00am.
