Panoz Continues The Charge Into The Night At Sebring
The strong charge of the #51 Panoz "Spirit of America" LMP01-Evo of Bryan Herta, David Donohue and Bill Auberlen received a minor set-back at the nine-hour mark of the 50th Anniversary Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.
While running in third position, Donohue was hit in the left rear tyre by a lapped car, breaking the rim and forcing him into the pits.
The delay caused the #51 car to loose third spot to the Riley & Scott of Jim Matthews, Guy Smith and Mark Goossens.
"I was coming through lapped traffic when somebody tried to pull back into line as I got past just before the back straight," Donohue reported back to the pits via radio.
"Unfortunately, the guy misjudged it and hit my left rear. The guys turned me around pretty quickly and got me back out, but we have lost our advantage we had over the Riley & Scott.
"There is still three hours to go, but now will have to fight a little harder to try to get a spot on the podium."
After nine hours of racing, the Audi of Dindo Capello, Johnny Herbert and Christian Pescatori held the lead over the privateer Audi of Andy Wallace, Jan Lammers and Stefan Johnansson.
Bryan Herta is the next driver scheduled to climb aboard the #51 Panoz.
"This is the longest race I have ever done, but I still feel very fresh after my first two stints," Herta said.
"I am really looking forward to getting out there and racing in the dark.
"I had my first experience of driving at night during the Thursday night session and absolutely loved it - just too much fun.
"There is still a very long way to go in this race, but we are going to fight very hard. Both Brian and Bill have done a great job and it is just unfortunate what happened to David in the last stint."
