Record-setting runs leave Goodyear cars tops in classes

SEBRING, Fla. (March13, 2003) -- A pair of cars racing on Goodyear tires set class records in qualifying today for Saturday's American Le Mans Series Mobil One 12 Hours of Sebring at Sebring International Raceway.

James Weaver, driving a Lola for Dyson Racing, will start the endurance classic first among LMP 675 cars. Weaver's time of 1minute, 49.361 seconds (121.798 mph) bested a record set by Jonny Kane a year ago. Weaver and co-drivers Butch Leitzinger and Andy Wallace will start fifth in the field overall.

Oliver Gavin, driving a Chevrolet Corvette, set a GTS class record. Gavin's time, 1 minute, 59.024 seconds (111.910 mph), was 18th overall. Gavin's record broke the mark set by teammate Ron Fellows in a Corvette back in 2000.

Gavin will team with Kelly Collins and Andy Pilgrim in the race. The Corvette driven by Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell and Franck Freon qualified second in class and will start 19th overall.

The ALMS cars will practice twice on Friday in preparation for Saturday's race.
