Fortunes again swing for JML Team Panoz Squad in California
JML Team Panoz two LMP900 machines again endured differing fortunes in qualifying for round three of the 2003 American Le Mans Series at Infineon Raceway today.
While Olivier Beretta put the #10 Panoz in 6th position on the grid for tomorrow's 2 hour, 45 minute race, the sister car steered by David Saelens was not as fortunate.
After showing impressive speed during the morning practice, Saelens suffered a differential failure as he left the pits on his first lap of qualifying.
That will put the #11 car in 33rd position on the grid for tomorrow's race.
Tomorrow's race will be broadcast on NBC throughout the US starting at 4pm (eastern).
"The car is quite strong but we still have a problem with understeer on the exit of corners. "This makes it tough to maintain a rhythm because I can't get on the power as soon as I would like. "Fortunately the car has been trouble free all weekend and Gunnar has done a good job so we will have to wait and see how tomorrow works out."
"I had a very similar feeling in the car that Oli had - understeer really is our biggest problem around here. "I am going to start the car tomorrow and the plan will be to push as hard as we can and see where we are after the first stint "I was able to get a lot of laps under my belt this morning which was good, but tomorrow will not be easy. "We will be working very hard tonight to try and make further improvements to the car before tomorrow."
"It seems like I must have run over a black cat - our luck doesn't seem to be on our side so far. "As I drove out the pits the differential failed as I headed up the hill. It is really disappointing because the car has been quite fast and I really like the track. "Hopefully our luck will turn around for tomorrow and Ben and I can have a good run. Traffic is going to be tough, but we will have to do the best we can."
"It was great to get some laps under my belt after missing out yesterday - the track is certainly very different in a LMP900 car after doing the laps in the school car early in the week. "The traffic was pretty fierce but it was good to get experience in that situation because it will be very handy for the race. "You always seem to be turning and there are very few straights here. I was able to learn where we could pass and where it is difficult. This is going to be handy after what happened to David in qualifying."
