American Le Mans Series Grand Prix of Sonoma Fact Sheet, May 17-19

What: Sears Point Raceway will host the top sports-car racers in the world May 17-19 for the American Le Mans Series Grand Prix of Sonoma, presented by Foster's Lager.

When: May 17-19, 2002. This is the second stop on the 10-race series for 2002. The Sears Point event will be an endurance race spanning 2 hours, 45 minutes. The event will be broadcast live on Speed Channel. The green flag will drop on Sunday, May 19, at 1 p.m.

Circuit: ALMS drivers will compete on Sears Point Raceway's 12-turn, 2.52-mile circuit. Increased runoff has been added at virtually every turn for the 2002 season, adding to driver safety. Sports cars expected to compete include Audi, Porsche, Dyson, Panoz, Saleen, Corvette and Ferrari.

Race Length: The Grand Prix of Sonoma will span 2 hours, 45 minutes.

Entries: Twenty-six teams were on the starting grid for last year's Grand Prix of Sonoma.

What to expect:
Audi has won the last two ALMS events at Sears Point Raceway. * Former Formula One standout Johnny Herbert will compete for the Champion Audi team at Sears Point. *. Allan McNish (Audi) holds the record for the fastest lap ever recorded at Sears Point at 112.440 mph (set in 2000). McNish now drives for Toyota in Formula One. *BMW swept the top four spots in last year's GT class, but is no longer with the series, opening the door for Porsche. * Ron Fellows, who competes for Corvette in the GTS class, has also raced at Sears Point in NASCAR Winston Cup action. Fellows teamed with Johnny O'Connell to win the GTS crown at Sears Point in 2001. * 2001 ALMS champions were Emanuele Pirro (Audi, Prototype), Terry Borcheller (Saleen, GTS) and Jorg Muller (BMW, GT).
