The X-Factor Grand Prix of Sonoma will re-launch the 2001 American Le Mans Series season. The series has been idle since the Superflo 12 Hours at Sebring in March so that race teams could travel to Europe to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Entrants at Sears Point will include the Audi Sport North America group that took the top two finishing positions last month at Le Mans, as well as Corvette Racing, winner of the GTS class in France. Among the drivers will be Ron Fellows and Boris Said, who competed in last month's NASCAR Winston Cup race at the raceway. Sears Point Raceway has hosted a race for the American Le Mans Series every year since the formation of the series in 1999. The ALMS will run the full 2.52-mile "long" course at Sears Point, not the shorter course used by NASCAR last month. The X-Factor is a new line of prepaid cellular phone products and pre-paid phone cards that are being launched in the San Francisco area in conjunction with the ALMS event at Sears Point.
